When you start looking at comforters you need to understand the materials that are listed on the comforters tag. Read carefully and fully understand what you are reading.
Feathers and down are both very common fill materials. It's a common mistake for consumers to think that the two are basically the same. Nothing could be further from the truth. The only thing they have in common is the fact that they both come from a bird. There is a huge difference between the two!
Although both feathers and down have a warmth rating down is far higher than feather. Feathers are mixed with down but they are not where the warmth comes from. Down has different fill powers. The higher the fill power the warmer the comforter will be so be sure to read the label carefully.
If the label has a high percentage of feathers it means your comforter will be nice and fluffy but not as warm as a comforter that has a high down content. Now depending on where you live that might not be so important. If you live in a climate where it gets really cold then down would be a better choice.
Down is the inner plumage found on geese or ducks. It's like tiny miniature feathers. It's what keeps the birds dry and warm so it's no wonder it works so well in a comforter. Down is also a lot softer than feathers are.
The trouble is down is expensive so most quality bedding will have a mix of feathers and down. This keeps your comforter affordable and warm and still so luxurious.
If you have allergies neither down nor feathers may be a good choice for you. Instead you will want to look for a synthetic fill that is hypoallergenic. This will be sufficed for most people unless your allergies are really severe.
Polyester fiber is also a popular choice. It doesn't have the same softness and cuddle value but it still can feel luxurious and it's not as expensive. It's also a good choice for anyone with allergies.
Fill rate is another important element which we touched on earlier. Fill rate is the amount of filling between the top and bottom material and the higher the rating the more body heat will be retained so the warmer the bedding.
If you live in a colder climate and like to keep the heat turned down at night then you will want to purchase something with a high fill rate.

So if you live in California you'd be happy with a fill of 500, if you lived in the mid west where winters are milder a fill power of 575 would be great, but if you live in Alaska you'd want a fill power of say 650.
Thread count is also something you need to consider. It is especially important with down and feather bedding. Low thread counts means the fabric is not very dense and thus feathers can slip through.
Thread counts that are more than 330 provide a close weave and nice dense fabric. This means the filling isn't able to work its way out of the fabric. The higher thread count is also silkier to the feel and so much more luxurious.
The construction of the shell is also very important. The closed box method divides the comforter into sections by sewing through both the top and bottom. It's much like how a quilt is made and it keeps the fill confined within the square.
This baffle construction provides a top quality comforter that's fluffy and ever so luxurious. There are never any cold spots with this type of stitching.
The open box method means there is no dividers so the fill can slide around inside the comforter causing bunches and lumps which mean it not only doesn't look so great you've also got cold spots.
After going to the expense of buying those beautiful comforters you don't want to just toss them in the washing machine even if the tag says you can. They are so big and bulky that often a home washer can't adequately handle them. Instead drop them at your local dry cleaners. It's a much smarter method which keeps the comforter in new condition.
